4 Not-So-Common Reasons Why People Clean Their Homes

So, why do people clean their Homes?

Okay, okay, let me be the first one to address it. “People clean their houses to ensure they keep being healthy.” Yes! That is the simplest answer to the question at hand. I am pretty sure some people will call this article useless right off-the-bat. However, health factors aside, four not-so-common reasons why people clean their homes.

  • Cleaning your home provides a sense of accomplishment and a feeling of satisfaction.

Many individuals clean their homes until it is spotless, spick and span for the sole purpose of achieving that euphoric feeling of happiness after seeing the final result of a job well done. For many, the unmatched joy of cleaning comes from that tangible result is something that nothing comes close to compare to anything else.

According to Dr. Fugen Neziroglu, Ph.D., author of the book, Overcoming Compulsive Hoarding and the director of the renowned Bio-Behavioral Institute in Great Neck, New York, with doing a cleaning activity within the house, we “get to have an end-product. In many tasks, you do not get an end-product that is so perceptible.” Additionally, it makes people feel like they have completed an undertaking. Moreover, it gives them a feeling that they are ready to take on other challenges that may come their way.

  • Cleaning your home is a way to stay in control

Believe it or not, for most people, living in a clean area provides them a sense of control over our environment. Some even clean their house before going on vacation. As knowing that their house is spotless when they come back everything will look the same and in order.

Additionally, according to Sally Augustin, Ph.D., an environmental psychologist, and principal at Design with Science, “We’re the type of animals which still like to keep track of what is around us all the time.” There is also an evolutionary need that is present in all of us for that control. So, we prefer to gravitate towards clean, open, uncluttered spaces, which are simpler to survey. And when we are in that kind of environment, we feel more relaxed and at ease.

  • Cleaning your home calms your mind

There are also some who claims that cleaning their houses helped them feel at peace and a sense of tranquility. As the mind zones out, it focuses only on the task at hand.  Additionally, many testify that when they start cleaning, it is as if cleaning up their external environment makes them feel like they are cleaning up their psyche.

Which is why Rebecca Beaton, Ph.D., the founder, and the director of Atlanta, Georgia’s Anxiety & Stress Management Institute encourage her clients to practice cleaning as part of their therapeutic task. Having a common everyday activity, like cleaning one’s home, that has a calming and soothing effect on a person. It is ideal to ensure that they can feel tranquil whenever they want.

  • Cleaning your home is a great stress-buster

In our daily grind, we accumulate a tremendous amount of stress. It is that same collection of stress which weakens our body making it susceptible to illnesses. To prevent it from happening, people look for activities to relieve the stress and pressure. Many claims that the act of cleaning is a far superior stress-buster than any other activity available.

While there are some who see the act of cleaning in the middle of an important task as a form of procrastination, Dr. Neziroglu states compared to all the alternatives available; it is a far healthy way to handle anxiety, stress, and pressure. “People may clean as a form of distraction…and doing something mindless can rest your brain.”
